I’m kind of in a crazed cross stitching mode. Have you noticed? If you’ve missed any of my cross-stitched wood and chair projects, scroll to the bottom of the post for the links. This time, I mixed it up a bit and instead of cross-stitching on wood, I got a little seasonal and made a monogrammed cross-stitch pumpkin! A total win for fall, right?
To make a stitched pumpkin, you’ll need a faux pumpkin {you could do it on a real one but I wouldn’t recommend it – smile}, yarn, string, or embroidery thread, a large bore needle, and a cross stitch pattern of the monogram you want to make.
To create a pattern, do a little google search of cross-stitch alphabets, find one you like, and draw it onto grid paper. For this project, I made each X two squares by two squares.
Center the pattern onto the pumpkin and tape it in place.
Using a needle, poke into the pumpkin at each hole. Poke all the way through if you can or use pliers to push the needle through. You could also use a small drill bit to create the holes.
Using a craft knife, cut a hole into the bottom of the pumpkin. Make sure it’s large enough for your hand to fit through.
Using the twine or thread, stitch through each hole, creating an X. Stitch in the same direction every time.
Simple as can be. And if the holes are only the width of your needle, you won’t even need to secure the ends of the thread inside the pumpkin … the pumpkin will close up around the thread and hold it in place.
Depending on the size of the pumpkin, it will take less than thirty minutes to whip up this fall craft and you’ll have adorable fall decor for your mantel or porch.
Wouldn’t it be cute to cross stitch an entire word with one letter on each pumpkin?
