Spring has arrived and, if the weeds going crazy in my yard are any indication, growing season is here … in Texas, at least.  I’m definitely not a master gardener of any sort but I do have some favorite herbs that I plant every year and I love mixing it up a bit.  I’ve made a muffin tin herb garden, a pizza garden, and a beverage or cocktail garden, and I love finding clever upcycled ideas to mark what’s growing.  A couple of years ago, I marked my garden with fun repurposed chalkboard frying pan garden markers but this year, my plants will be labeled with DIY upcycled knife garden markers embellished with colorful vinyl!  These garden markers are cheap and easy to make and definitely a new favorite!

Before I show you how to make these upcycled knife garden markers, I want to tell you about the monthly challenge happening in the Upcycle Sharin’ facebook group {click on that link to join over 50,000 other members that love repurposed projects and to get the upcycle challenge information each month}!

monthly upcycle challenge

Monthly Themed Upcycle Challenge

At the beginning of each month this year, we’ll be posting a themed upcycling challenge.  You’ll have the chance to link up one {or more} of your favorite projects that fit the theme {you don’t need to have a blog … you can simply link a photo at the bottom of this post} and readers will have the chance to vote on their favorites!  So fun, right?  Even cooler?  We have sponsors each month so the winner will receive an awesome prize from one of our favorite brands!

This month’s theme is GARDEN {your project must be somehow related to gardens or gardening} and the challenge is sponsored by Fiskars!  Fiskars, one of my favorite companies for scissors and other cutting tools, is a go-to source for both crafters and gardeners.

The person with the most votes in this month’s challenge will win a set including Fiskars PowerGear2 SoftGrip Pruner, Lopper, and Hedge Shears, a prize valued at over $100!  That prize package will definitely help you get your garden in shape this spring!

How to Join the Upcycle Challenge

Check out my upcycled garden markers then link up your project in the link party below and vote for your favorites!  You have until April 15th to link your project.  Voting begins on April 16th at 12:01 am PT and ends April 30th at 11:59 pm PT.  Gather your friends and family to vote for your project because the person with the most votes wins.  The winner will be announced on May 1st.

Dukes and Duchesses DIY Upcycled Knife Garden Markers

Ready to see how I made this project? Making these upcycled knife garden markers is so simple!

Hit up your local thrift store for a handful of knives, making sure you find ones that have a fairly wide flat handle.  Knives are about fifteen cents a piece at my local thrift store so this really is a cheap project!  In addition to the knives, you’ll also need vinyl in varying colors.  Outdoor vinyl will stand up to the weather better but I’ve also had great luck with regular everyday vinyl, even when used outdoors.

You’ll cut the vinyl with a cutting machine, like the Cricut Maker, so first you’ll need to create the text in Cricut Design Space.  The font I used is called A Child’s Year but pick any font that suits your style.

When I created this text, I placed one letter on each line and then used the ungroup to letters command {found under advanced on the upper tool bar} to alter the spacing.  You can alter the spacing by decreasing the line space as well but I often find it easier just to do it manually.  Once the letters are spaced the way you want them, select the entire word, center it horizontally and then attach the letters together so they’ll cut as one piece.

Once the letters are cut, use transfer paper to apply them to the handles of the knives.

I just love the whimsical look of the colorful letters against the different patterns and styles of the cutlery.

These garden markers look so cute nestled in with herbs and they’re a great way to remember exactly what you’re growing!

This would be a fun project and I bet I can find some great old silverware at my local thrift store. Thanks for the upcycle idea!
