Cross Stitch Monogram on Wood

The other day on periscope, I gave a sneak peek at a project I was starting.  I finished it shortly after that sneak peek and I can’t wait to show you this cross stitch monogram on wood.  Those old reclaimed window sashes are now a fun piece of decor on my mantel!

I started by lining up the wood pieces side by side and used wood glue to attach the trim to a piece of plywood.  I clamped them in place for about twenty-four hours to be sure the glue had dried completely.

Using graph paper, I drew the pattern for a cross-stitch monogram {I found a monogram online and used it as a guideline}.  I used four squares by four squares for each X and proportionately added length and width.

I centered the letter on the trim and taped it in place then drilled through the points of each X …

… and removed the paper.

Where the points fell between the wood, I just drilled as well as I could into the space.  Once all the holes were drilled, I used a sanding sponge to get rid of all the rough edges.

Using a plastic tapestry needle, I cross-stitched through all the holes …

… until I had a lower case cross-stitch monogram.  The pattern I chose is sort of calligraphy style and my kids think it looks like a backwards six but I like it.

This reclaimed piece is a fun addition to my mantel and a great reminder of the junking trip through Texas where I found this wood.

Oh wow – I never would have thought to do cross-stich on wood. What a fun idea! We always have scrap beadboard laying around that I never know what to do with. Oh the possibilities!

I am co-hosting the #HomeMattersParty Link Party this month and would love to have you stop by for a visit. The door is open for the current party through Monday.

Nice work! That’s a creative spin off of embroidery. I have been drawn to the ‘hand stitched’ look lately. I have been researching embroidery a bit and hope to learn some stitches soon. Your project caught my eye. 🙂
