A Cross-Stitched Chair

I’m a bit smitten with non-traditional cross-stitching right now {remember my cross-stitched wood joy sign and my cross-stitched wood heart sign?} and decided to make a cross-stitched chair after seeing a few really fun designs on pinterest.

cross stitched chair

I’ve had the perfect cane chair in my dining room for some time.  Years ago, I painted it and recovered the cushion but I decided it was time for a little something more.  I love color in my home and I love adding little eclectic touches.  Cross-stitching on this chair seemed like the perfect way to bring in both.

I stitched with cotton yarn.  A thin yarn {like this cotton} will give a subtle cross-stitched pattern.  The thicker the yarn, the more distinct and bold the pattern will be.

I found a free {simple} flower cross-stitch pattern online {just google for one that suits your style} and followed it almost entirely.  To get started, find the middle of the pattern and the middle of your chair back, then count the stitches out.  Once you’ve got a few stitches in place, it’s really simple to continue the pattern.  Using a large plastic tapestry needle will also make the stitching easier.

I wove the ends in on the back of the chair but also used a dab of hot glue to ensure my ends won’t unravel or pull out.

The stitching is a bit labor intensive {it took me a couple of hours to stitch this chair} but it’s fairly mindless and would be a great craft to do while you’re watching a show.

The end result is very subtle but draws your eye and adds a fun handmade touch to my dining room.

I think I’ll be looking for a cane stool next!  Wouldn’t a cross-stitched seat on a stool be fun?

This idea is genius! I never thought to use a chair similar to this, but now that I’ve seen it, it makes me want to head down to my local thrift store to see if I can find one!
I would love if you shared this at our Yarn Fanatic Link Party.
