You know how much I love an upcycled project … and I know so many of you share that love. I just finished my latest project and I love the way this upcycled cabinet door command center turned out! It was really inexpensive to make, fun to put together, and it makes a cute message center in my daughter’s room!
I was rummaging around at ReStore a few weeks ago and came across two small mint-colored doors and a large white cabinet door. The walls in my daughter’s room are painted mint and I thought these cabinet doors would fit in perfectly. You know how one thing leads to another? That’s how this idea got started. It began as an idea to make a dry erase board and ended up as a command center with three different pieces.
In addition to the cabinet doors, I grabbed a drawer pull and two knobs at ReStore and then bought dry erase spray paint, chalkboard paint, and a piece of cork {affiliate links}, approximately 1/4 inch thick.
I decided to make it easy and follow the natural lines on the mint cabinet doors. I thought that would add a quirky touch and keep some of the dating intact. After scrubbing down the doors, I got started on the fun part.
To make the cork board, I cut a piece of cork to fit the space in the middle of the cabinet and hot glued it into place.
I followed the lines for the chalkboard as well, painting the center with a few coats of chalkboard paint and allowing it to dry completely before seasoning it with chalk. {To season a painted chalkboard, use the side of a piece of chalk to color the entire board then erase it. This will keep the chalk from making permanent marks when you write on it.}
I love using drawer pulls to hold chalk {you can see other examples on my pantry door chalkboard, my art table, and my first cabinet door chalkboard} so I added a drawer pull to the bottom of this chalkboard as well.
To make the dry erase board, I taped off the edges and spray painted the middle with dry erase paint. I painted a number of coats to be sure I had solid coverage then let it dry completely. To finish it off, I added two cheap knobs to the bottom of the board to act as a pen holder.
I left all the other knicks, distressed areas, and chippy paint as is {because chippy paint is my favorite!} and hung them on the wall at just the right height for my little one.
This upcycled command center will be the perfect place to hang special items, write notes and reminders, and draw. And the best part? The entire thing was super affordable!

I love repurposed projects, Randi, and yours makes me so happy. I’m going to be on the look out for cabinet doors to upcycle. My neighbors better be warned that I’ll be watching the curb for cabinet doors. Thanks for sharing at the This Is How We Roll Link Party. Pinning now.
