Upcycled Cabinet Door Chalkboard

This might be one of my favorite projects to date: an upcycled cabinet door chalkboard.  I love the way it turned out and it’s just such a fun feature in Kennedy’s room, adding a bit of color, a touch of vintage, and a fun spot for notes.  Repurposing cabinet doors is one of my favorite things!

Where to Buy Old Cabinet Doors

I started with an old $1 cabinet door from ReStore, my favorite source for finding old cabinet doors.  {To see all the things I love to buy there, be sure to check out my post about the best things to buy at ReStore!}  The price on cabinet doors is unbeatable and I like the old lines on many of them.

Supplies to Make a Repurposed Cabinet Door Chalkboard

In addition to the old cabinet door, I also used some leftover chalkboard paint, leftover green paint from another project, and a vintage style drawer pull that I had in my stash.  You can usually find really cute drawer pulls at your local craft store.

How to Make an Upcycled Cabinet Door Chalkboard

I used the lines of the cabinet door as the paint lines {they were perfect!} and painted inside them with a few coats of chalkboard paint.

I finished the outer edges with a couple of coats of green paint to coordinate with Kennedy’s room.  Obviously any colors would work great but a simple craft project like this is a great way to use up extra paint.

I used screws to add the old drawer pull to the bottom of the chalkboard.  It serves as a super cute chalk holder.  The drawer pull is definitely my favorite touch and such a great way to repurpose the pull.

This was a quick, super inexpensive project and the chalkboard looks great in Kennedy’s room next to her vintage desk.

I have wondered how the chalkboard paint holds up. Does it get really smeary after a while if you write/erase/write/erase?

I don’t have any links, but I’ve seen this with white board paint as well. Subway art maybe? Around here I know I would probably use it as a chore chart, lol. 🙂

This is the post that got me to check out this blog, and I’m even more interested now that I see you shop at Habitat Restore; one of these opened up in our city last year. (Santa Rosa, CA.) Ours also had a $1 cabinet door sale not too long ago. I bought a couple of really long, skinny pieces that I’m using for shelving. I love that place!

Oooooo! What a great idea! I’m thinking something like this would be cool leaning on an eclectic fireplace mantle! Love the green as well.

It is so cute! Yes.. love the chalk holder. Did you glue it on or screw it on?

I found you from the Chalk Talk link party.
You can also use the chalkboard paint on the inside of one of you kitchen cabinet doors for a memo board for yourself.
I’d love for you to link this up to my Organizing Mission link party! It is a great organizational tool.
