A Cabinet Door Tray

Our family room coffee table has a new cabinet door tray made from an old cabinet door.  Kind of fun, kind of colorful, kind of eclectic.  Not bad for an old cabinet door and a couple of handles,  huh?  And very little effort.

Knowing I wanted to do this project, I found an old cabinet door during my last trip to Canton.  If you won’t be heading to a large sale, ReStore is a great place to find old cabinet doors … and they’re always so affordable!

The cabinet door was dirty and badly painted but I scrubbed it and sanded it down and it was ready to be upcycled into a tray.

I wanted a tiny bit of color to peek through my main color so I spray painted the edges of the cabinet door with bright yellow paint, then rubbed different spots with a wax candle.  The wax keeps the next coat of paint from adhering well so that you can lightly sand it away and have the contrasting layer underneath show through.

The next coat, a bright turquoise blue, was sprayed on …

… and lightly sanded over the waxed areas to reveal some yellow.

I added my favorite touch: bright orange industrial handles {also found in Canton}.  They were bought specifically for this tray and I love them.  I simply screwed them into the tray, using screws that were short enough not to poke out the back side of the tray.  The contrast with the blue is vivid and fun and adds the perfect colorful touch to our family room.

This tray is perfect for holding remote controls, drinks, coasters, and other everyday items.  I thought Phil might balk at it but he actually likes it.  He may be starting to see the beauty in repurposed junk {smile}.

I’m still working on getting the baptismal gown into the shadow box! I’ve been working on it for 1/2 a year. Maybe you could pin that post for me.
My point is… where do you find the time for all of this fun crafting? You are amazing!
