I recently used a birthday gift card to purchase some crafting books from Amazon. I’m sometimes very hesitant to buy books online when I can’t sit and peruse them beforehand but these purchases all turned out quite well.
One of the books I bought was Sewing School. Lila has been interested in learning to sew and I thought this might be a fun book. I was taken with the colors and image on the cover and somehow missed the subtitle explaining that the projects in the book are for hand-sewing. Although my first reaction was a bit negative, I think Lila {and others} will have a lot of fun with this book. I do plan to start her with some machine sewing this summer.
I set Lila up with a stuffy project this morning and Kennedy and Luke decided to join in the fun. The kids each drew a picture onto muslin {Kennedy drew a heart, Luke drew a fighting monkey, and Lila drew a cow with a heart covering the mouth … apparently she didn’t like the mouth she drew}, we cut around it, backed it with fleece, and they all whip-stitched around the edges, stuffing it before closing the final gap.
The twins were so pleased with their sewing projects and I was so impressed with how well they did. Not only did they sit and studiously finish the entire project …
… but the stitching was excellent, especially considering this was their first time ever holding a needle and thread.
After completing this first project, I’m feeling a lot more enthusiastic about this book and I think it would be a great addition to any crafting-with-kids library.
I’ve started truncating my posts … please pop over to my blog to read the rest!
