The Thrifted Jewelry Holder Tutorial

I love using old cabinet doors in new ways and this thrifted jewelry holder is such a great way to organize and repurpose all at the same time!  I shared a sneak peek of this project when I first entered it in a craft competition but now I’ll give you a bit more detail and a true tutorial.

I started with a $1 cabinet door from ReStore.  While the prices vary a bit on cabinet doors, I can always find a huge selection there and they’re generally less than $5.  That makes them the perfect supply for repurposing.

To make the jewelry holder, I knocked the two panels out of the cabinet {I used a flat screwdriver, a hammer, and a lot of banging until they popped out the back}.  Once they were out, I painted the cabinet door using some paint I had left over from another project then distressed the edges with fine sandpaper and glazed it with some leftover Ralph Lauren glaze.  This gave it a bit of a chippy paint, distressed look that I love.

Once the paint was dry, I used hot glue to attach window screen {found at the hardware store} into the old panel spots, making sure they were pulled taut.  The holes in the screen are the perfect size for holding earrings.

I thought it would be fun to use all the cabinet hardware in this project so I removed the handle, painted it with a glossy white paint, then reattached it and used it to hang bracelets and necklaces.

I also left the original hinges intact and used them to attach the jewelry holder to the wall, inserting screws through the holes into anchors in the wall.

I love the way it turned out and it’s such a fun way to store jewelry in my daughter’s bathroom!
