I just finished a project that’s not only going to help our family stay on top of things but it’s going to assist me in training my kids to get organized: a family command center.
I started with a DIY dry erase frame, a budget-friendly way to add a large dry erase board to any space.
You can buy large framed dry erase boards at most office stores but they’re quite expensive, ranging anywhere from $30-75. I made my own dry erase board from wall trim and a large slab of marker board. Marker board can be found at most hardware stores near the peg board. My large piece cost just under $10. I framed the marker board with the wall trim, mitering the corners, spray painting the frame black, and attaching it to my board with hot glue.
Once I had the large background finished, I added components that will help my kids stay organized. This is a project that can easily be personalized for any family.
I hung a clock on our board and drew arrows to the 7 and the 4 … when my younger kids are putting their coats on in the morning {our command center hangs over the cubbies in our mudroom-slash-laundry room}, if the clock hands are pointing to the arrows I drew then they’ll know it’s time to go!
I added a phrase in vinyl lettering {cut with my Silhouette} and left a large open spot where we can write daily reminders as needed.
An adhesive pocket is attached to the board as well and vinyl marks it as a spot for school forms. I placed a pen right next to the pocket so that forms can be quickly filled out or signed and sent back to school.
Our command center also has a clipboard for personal notes {also labeled in vinyl}, a bit of inspirational art, and a cup containing dry erase markers. The kids can doodle, write notes, or leave reminders on any of the blank space.
I love our new command center and I’m looking forward to watching the ways my kids customize it to meet our family’s needs and stay organized.
