Do you celebrate May Day? I love the tradition of this spring holiday: leaving baskets of flowers on a neighbor’s door knob as a sweet and pretty surprise! This repurposed May Day basket is made from a glass Christmas ornament and is a fun way to upcycle this left over craft item!
To make this simple May Day basket, you’ll need a plastic or glass Christmas ornament {I love the large square ones but any will work great}, thin wire to create the handle, patterned painter’s tape {affiliate link}, and paint.
Wrap a piece of painter’s tape around the middle of the ornament {I love the scalloped tape but any pattern would look pretty cute} and paint below the tape, using spray paint or regular craft paint. Hang the ornament by its hook while it dries to prevent messing up the paint on the bottom of the ornament.
Remove the tape carefully so you don’t peel back the paint. Remove and discard the hook on top of the ornament and use the wire to create a little hanger around the little stem at the top of the ornament. If the wire slides around, add a little glue from a glue gun to hold it in place.
Fill the vase with water, add a few flowers {flowers with thin stems will work best since the opening of the ornament is rather small}, and hang this repurposed May Day basket on the front door knob of your neighbor’s house! They’ll love the sweet surprise when they open their door on May Day!
