A Wire May Day Basket

May is right around the corner and that means it’s time to make May Day baskets!  I don’t deliver May Day baskets to my neighbors every single year but it’s a tradition I love.  This year, I’ll be placing a wire May Day basket on door handles all over our street!

a wire may day basket

These simple May Day baskets can be made in just minutes.  You’ll need wire in a thick gauge and a styrofoam cone.

To begin, wrap the wire once around the cone {where you start on the cone will determine how large your wire basket is} and wrap the beginning end around the first loop …

… then begin wrapping around the cone all the way down to the bottom.  Don’t worry about having perfect loops or having a few kinks in your wire.  In the end, it looks really cute and adds to the whimsy of the basket.

When you get to the bottom of the cone, swirl the wire to create a base.

Cut a piece of wire to create a handle and attach it to the top wire as seen in the photo below.  To get a nice curve on the handle, twist it over a glass.

Carefully slide the wire off the styrofoam cone and add fresh flowers …

… then place these sweet and simple baskets on the doorknobs of your neighbor’s houses!

Thank you so much for reminding me about May Day! I remember making paper flowers as a little for our neighbors!
