My family room has some fun new lighting: a DIY monogram lamp that’s using GE LED Energy Smart bulbs to add warm light to our room!

how to make a DIY monogram lamp

I recently stopped at Target and found an endcap full of the GE LED Energy Smart bulbs.  One LED bulb lasts as long as 15 incandescent bulbs and uses 80% less energy, making them a practical and economical choice for our home.

GE LED at Target

Making this monogram lamp is simple.  Along with my LED bulb from Target, I bought a large metal letter and a lamp kit.  There are a variety of lamp kits available but I used a simple pendant lamp kit with a toggle switch.

supplies needed for light

I drilled a hole in the top of the letter, then used wire cutters to trim the area large enough to feed the cord and switch through.  I set the fixture into the hole then pushed the metal back up around it.

I also drilled a hole at the back of the bottom of the letter, allowing the cord to feed out and plug into the wall.  After feeding it through, I used a metal cutter to trim up the hole and bent the edges under with pliers, eliminating sharp edges.  {The picture below was taken prior to cleaning up the edges.}

That’s all there is to it.  The final step is to add a light bulb to give just the right light to the room.

I’ve always had the idea that LED bulbs are glaringly white and very modern looking but GE LED Energy Smart bulbs emit a soft white-like light and look like ordinary bulbs.  I also love that they’re not hot to the touch.  With a house full of curious kids, that’s a great feature for me.

It’s so easy to make a personalized lamp and it adds such a fun and unique touch to our home!

    The shade makes this lamp. Could you tell us where you got it?

      It’s from Target … but it’s not new so I’m not positive they’ll still have them.

    How did you get the lampshade up so high since the light kit is right on top of the letter? Also what would you suggest doing to stablize the bottom of the letter S for one of these lights?
    Thanks! Cute idea!

      My lampshade sits on the bulb – it has the little spring thing that just wraps right around the bulb so that’s why it’s positioned like it is. Hmmm … to stabilize the S, since you’ll be cutting into the bottom of it in order to feed the wires through, could you also put something inside there to weight it down? Just a thought.

      This lamp kit is from Hobby Lobby but you can find lamp kits at any craft store and even at a lot of hardware stores!
