May Day Basket

I might be a throwback from another time but I love the almost-lost May Day basket tradition.  Sneaking a basket on a neighbor’s doorknob or waking up to find a colorful basket on your own is just such a great surprise and the perfect way to welcome spring.  And a May Day basket can be so simple to make.  This cute basket is upcycled from an item that was headed to the junk pile … and now it has new life as a sunny treat for a friend!

To make this May Day basket, start with a paper birthday hat.  I often have random hats left over from parties but if you don’t you can buy a whole package at the dollar store.

Remove the cheap elastic band that fits under the chin and insert bright ric rac or other ribbon through the holes then loop it up and use hot glue to attach it to itself.

Be sure the loop of ribbon is long enough to hang over a door knob without scrunching the flowers.

Print these sunny May Day tags {may day basket labels}, trim around the edge …

… and clip or glue it to the basket or ribbon {miniature clothespins are a really sweet way to clip the tag on}.

Add a bouquet of sunny daffodils or another pretty spring flower …

… and deliver to an unsuspecting neighbor or friend.  Simply hang the basket on their front doorknob on May 1st and leave … they’ll be in for a pleasant surprise when they open the door!
