DIY Yarn Ball Garland

I’m a sucker for garlands.  I love the color and the sense of fun that they add to a space and I’d string them all over my house if I had enough.  Pom pom garlands and felt ball garlands are time consuming to make and not so cheap to buy so I came up with an alternative that’s fairly quick to make {quicker than making a pile of pom poms} and quite inexpensive: a DIY yarn ball garland made with yarn and styrofoam balls!  Ready to get crafting?

To make a yarn ball garland, you’ll need yarn or wool in colors of your choice {this is a great way to use up some of those random balls of yarn you have left over from other projects} and styrofoam balls in any size.

For a standard garland that you’re going to drape over something, I would recommend using 1-2″ styrofoam balls … any bigger and they won’t lay well.  {I used 2″ balls for this project.}

Holding the end of the yarn tightly against the ball, begin wrapping the yarn tightly around in all different directions, just as you would roll up a ball of yarn.

You want to cover all the white spaces so that all you see is yarn.

When the ball is fully wrapped, use a tapestry needle to pull the end under the other yarn or add a dab of hot glue to hold it in place.

Use this technique to create enough balls for the length of garland you want.

To string the garland, use a long piece of yarn and, with the tapestry needle, poke the needle through the center of each ball and pull the yarn through, spacing the yarn balls at the desired distance apart.  {I spaced them about five inches apart.}

To keep the balls from moving on the string, tie a small knot on either side of the yarn ball.  You can also add a dab of hot glue at the entry point of each ball.

Hang the garland anywhere you need a little pop of color and whimsy.

I hung mine over my vintage wallpaper sign but it would look really cute strung over a window frame, a chandelier, or a bed frame.

Do you love garlands as much as I do?  What’s your favorite place to hang them?
