Making a simple DIY centerpiece is such a great way to add a special touch to a fall tablescape. This log and taper centerpiece combines rustic and elegant to create a beautiful candlelit table, perfect for fall entertaining! And after you’ve read through this tutorial, pop over to the Clinton Kelly website for more great DIY centerpiece inspiration!
To make this simple centerpiece, I used birch logs in different sizes and heights. I bought these at the craft store but you could forage for your own if you’ve got a good natural spot nearby.
Using a drill bit the same width as the candles {I used mini birthday tapers}, drill multiple holes in the top of the log, spacing them evenly. Drill the holes approximately one inch deep to securely hold the candles.
Place the tapers into each drilled hole and set the logs across the center of the table. If you’re using foraged {free} logs, it would be fabulous to have a long row of logs and tapers down the entire table!
The tall tapers look so elegant when lit and the rustic logs create such a fun and dichotomous look.
To complete my fall tablescape, I added large burlap leaves between plates …
… and made a table runner from ruffled burlap and a vintage player piano paper roll {found at a local antique store}.
Brown transferware plates add pattern and color and I added a touch of bright white with flour sack napkins tied with twine and placed under the plates.
Such a simple table but the elements combine perfectly to create a warm and rustic tablescape.

What a lovely table. The player piano roll is such a unique idea. I love the burlap leaf tucked onto the edge of the plate, too! Thank you for sharing this great idea for the candleholder birch pieces!
