Do you celebrate the first day of school with a special breakfast or dinner? An upcycled apple place card holder is the perfect addition for your back to school tablescape … and it’s a great way to repurpose old door knobs!
To make an apple place card holder, I started with a pile of nasty old brass doorknobs. A while ago, my parents replaced all the outdated hardware in their house and we saved the doorknobs, certain that there would be a fun project for them at some time. With apples being the decor of choice for back to school, they were just right for transforming!
Upcycling these brass knobs into apples was simple. I taped off the stem, spray painted the round part red, then brushed brown craft paint onto the stem section. I cut green paper leaves from scrapbook paper and hot glued them onto the stem. Super easy and quick enough to make a batch for the whole family.
Poke a slip of paper into the top of the knob with the name of each guest … or use chalkboard duct tape for a school-themed name card.
Celebrating the first day of school always helps get the year off to a fun start …
… and creates sweet memories for the kids and parents alike.
