18 Ways to Upcycle Flannel Shirts

Fall and flannel go hand in hand, don’t they?  I love the cozy feeling of flannel {flannel pajamas in the winter are the best!} and I love the look of plaids and flannels in home decor during the cooler months.  Adding flannel touches is easy, especially when you upcycle old flannel shirts.  Whether you hit up the thrift store or use some old flannels you’re no longer wearing, these ideas are the perfect way to use old clothes.

18 ways to upcycle flannel shirts

I’m a bit smitten with homemade coffee sleeves and these colorful flannel shirt sleeve coffee cuffs are amazing.  I’ve made something similar with regular shirt sleeves but I definitely need to dig out the flannels next time.

Hand warmers are one of my must-haves during our winter soccer season {sitting outside at thirty degree games is rough} and I love these DIY hand warmers!  I don’t think they’d retain the heat long enough for a game but they’d be really great to hang on to when we’re warming up by the fire afterwards.

How cute is this idea?  A repurposed flannel shirt cat bed!  It’s cute and cozy and could easily be used for a small dog, as well.

I’ve always loved the look of elbow patches and these flannel heart elbow patches are about as good as it gets.  It’s a great way to extend the life of that favorite sweater!

These DIY beer koozies are not only aesthetically pleasing but, here in Texas, they’re the perfect way to deal with all that condensation that builds up on bottles.  These would make a great gift idea for Christmas or Father’s Day!

Wreaths are a great way to add to your decor and this buffalo plaid flannel shirt wreath is gorgeous for any season!  Using an old shirt makes this craft project really cheap to make.

Homemade gift tags are the perfect way to top a gift and these flannel shirt gift tags couldn’t be cuter.  I might be making a big batch of these this Christmas!

I’ve knit a repurposed market bag from old t-shirts but this upcycled market bag is a really fun alternative!  I think I’d use it as an everyday messenger bag instead of saving it for groceries!

Plaid is so perfect for fall which makes these plaid shirt pillows the ideal project.  I love the idea of making these from a shirt that has special meaning, maybe from a grandparent or other special person, and having that on display in a main room of the house.

These upcycled flannel pumpkins, made from a grunge style shirt from the 90’s, are another great way to decorate seasonally.  Any plaid would be adorable.  {Check out this post for more upcycled pumpkin ideas.}

You can still wear that worn out shirt by transforming it into flannel shirt bracelets!

Or let your pup reuse it with this DIY flannel dog coat pattern.  I’m smitten and really want to make one for my dog!

I love wearing scarves and this mismatched plaid scarf is so cute.  I love the mix of plaids!

Old chairs can be made over so easily and this one looks great with a repurposed flannel shirt seat cover.  It’s amazing how paint and fabric can completely transform a piece of furniture.  {Check out this post for other repurposed chair ideas.}

This DIY flannel shirt quilt is not only so cozy-looking but a really fun way to keep old shirts that might have sentimental value.  Wouldn’t you love to cuddle up in this next to a bonfire?

Like the market bag above, this flannel shirt tote bag is the perfect way to carry around books and other items!

The season of gifting will be here before you know it and these flannel shirt wine bottle bags are the perfect idea for all those friends that love upcycling … and wine {smile}!

And finally, add a little color and warmth to your home decor with flannel coasters.  You can match room colors or add a whole new combination.

    I have a flannel shirt that I love but, I’ve lost 60 pounds and it doesn’t fit anymore! I was so sad until I found this pattern to make a tote from it. Thanks for that!
