Sugar Hearts for Coffee or Tea

After seeing sugar hearts that sit on the rim of a mug or cup in a Sur La Table catalog, I couldn’t resist trying to make my own.  I won’t lie … this wasn’t the most simple project and my version is not perfect.  However, they were fairly quick  to make and if you can overcome the most difficult part, making the split so the sugar heart can fit over the edge of the cup, you’re set!

To make these sugar hearts that are perfect for stirring into a cup of coffee or tea, I used a small heart-shaped pan {similar to the mini muffin pan in this affiliate link}.  I considered using a candy mold but it just wasn’t big enough to form a firm heart.  A silicon heart mold in the right size would be ideal.

I stirred drops of water into a bowl of sugar, adding just a bit at a time, until I had a thick, wet paste {don’t put so much water in that the sugar dissolves} then packed the sugar mixture into the muffin pan.  I let the hearts partially dry then popped them out {if I let them dry completely, I was unable to get the hearts out of the pan without breaking them}.  Using a silicon mold will definitely make the hearts pop out easier.

Using a tiny paring knife, I scraped away a small divet on each heart so they’d fit on the edge of a cup.  Be careful not to break the heart when you’re creating the slot.

These sugar hearts were a bit tedious to make but fun … and the final result is adorable, isn’t it?  They’d be perfect for a coffee or tea party!

Thanks for the clever idea. I made some of these. I used a toothpick to push back the moist sugar and create the slit to hang it on the cup.
