Frog Cupcakes for a Leap Year

Do you say Happy Leap Day or Happy Leap Year?  Either way, since it only comes once every four years, it’s definitely worth celebrating.  Frog cupcakes were the natural choice to celebrate leap year because what else leaps like a frog?  These cupcakes aren’t anything amazing but they’re simple, the idea is cute, and the kids will love celebrating this random holiday!

How to Make Frog Cupcakes to Celebrate Leap Year

To make these frog cupcakes, bake a batch of plain cupcakes.  A storebought cake mix in any flavor is the easiest way but if you love to bake, you can definitely mix up a batch of your favorite recipe.

To decorate the cupcakes, use blue food coloring to color storebought frosting.  Again, if you love your buttercream recipe, go ahead and use that instead.  Slather it onto the cupcakes to look like water.  If you like to pipe and are good at it, piping waves across the cupcakes would also be really cute.

To make the frogs, cut large green gumdrops in half then press white chocolate chips into them to make the eyeballs {press the point of the chocolate chip into the gumdrop}.  Add a dab of dark icing {gel icing works well} or draw a pupil on with an edible marker then plant the gumdrops in the edge of the blue frosted cupcake.

These cupcakes are really simple to make and the kids will love them … and they can even help make them if you’ve got some kiddos that love to help in the kitchen.

What are your leap day or leap year traditions?

For another random idea for leap year, check out these green sherbet frog ice cream cones … all you need to do is scoop the ice cream and provide some candy and the kids can decorate the rest in any way they want!
