Do you celebrate Oktoberfest?  I’ve attended a few small local events but wouldn’t it be amazing to experience the real deal in Munich?  Lederhosen, steins of beer, crowds of people, and festivities for days!  This year I decided to bring a bit of the Oktoberfest flavor home with this rich and savory mustard cheese fondue recipe.  With an interesting combination of ingredients, it’s a gratifying appetizer or even the perfect light meal.  Simply add your favorite dippers, tap the nearest keg, and enjoy!

To make this mustard cheese fondue recipe, you’ll need

1/4 cup cooking sherry or dry white wine

3 tablespoons whole grain mustard

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

1/2 cup shredded muenster cheese {if you can only find slices, just tear them into small pieces}

1/4 cup sauerkraut

Over medium low heat, combine the cooking sherry and mustard in a small saucepan.  Stir and cook until heated through {do not boil} then add the two varieties of cheese and continue to cook over medium low heat until fully melted, stirring regularly.  Be careful not to burn the mixture on the bottom of the saucepan.

Pour the fondue into a small dish and add the sauerkraut in a scoop to the middle of the cheese mixture.

Serve alongside pear or apple slices, thin slices of a fresh baguette, and pieces of cooked sausage or bratwurst.  If needed, keep the cheese fondue warm by placing it in a fondue dish over low heat.

This delicious fondue is rich and tasteful and the diverse combination of ingredients pairs perfectly with both sweet or savory dippers.

And if you’re serving this recipe as a starter at a dinner party, consider serving it in individual ramekins with a dollop of sauerkraut on each and an individual supply of dippers.  Guests will love having their own small plate fondue!
