Laundry Room Organization {Useful and Stylish}

I received compensation from BHG at Walmart for my participation in the BHG Live Better Network.  However, all thoughts and opinions are my own. #BHGLiveBetter

I spend a lot of time in my laundry room.  One time I tried to figure out how many loads of laundry I do each week for our family of seven and it just depressed me so I stopped counting.  The clothes, the sports uniforms, the towels … it’s never-ending, isn’t it?  Since I’m in that room a lot, it’s important to me that it looks cute and is useful, convenient, and organized.  I recently added a few more touches to this multi-purpose area and thought I’d share my tips and tricks for laundry room organization.

useful stylish laundry room organization

Years ago, I painted my laundry room green apple and it was one of the best decisions I’ve made.  I love bright colors and the fresh vibrant walls really lighten up the space and make it cheery.

I recently reorganized the cupboards in the laundry room and added a few small galvanized bins to hold cloths and cleaning and ironing supplies.  These bins have become a staple in my home.  They’re great looking, the price can’t be beat, and they’re a simple way to organize {or hide} clutter and keep similar things together.  I use them in our gameroom, in my kids’ rooms, and in our coat closet.  You can customize them with labels or paint and I’ve even added washi tape numbers onto them.

I can’t stand the way a big box of laundry detergent looks so I love to store detergent in an old glass jar.  I recently painted the lid on this one to add a bit more color and I love the small change.  It looks perfect next to the vintage jar that holds my DIY dryer sheets.

A quick and easy way to freshen up a laundry room and add a bit of style is to change out your ironing board cover.  My cover was probably twenty years old {and covered in stains} so this greek key patterned ironing board cover is a great change.  The small things make such a big difference.

One of my favorite ways to organize the small things that get left in pockets or laundry baskets is my laundry room lost and found bucket made from an old washboard.  I drop loose change and small toys into the bucket and the kids are responsible for retrieving it and putting it away {coached by a fun little flash card that I found at a flea market}.

lost and found for the laundry

A new addition to the laundry room is an under-cabinet paper towel holder.  This was originally natural bamboo but I spray painted it so it would match and then distressed it a bit.  I’m always running out to the kitchen to grab paper towels for little spills in the laundry room or in the garage so this simple addition is one of my favorites.  And it takes up none of my coveted cabinet space.

Since most of the kids’ bedrooms are upstairs, I’ve always had a basket sitting on top of my washing machine.  When the kids take off their socks after school or notice a sweater is dirty, they can toss it in the basket in the laundry room rather than running up to their rooms.  While it’s always been really convenient, it’s also a bit of a hassle.  I have to lift it off the machine every time I change the load and well-meaning kids often overshoot the basket and throw their socks right behind the washing machine.  That old basket just got replaced with this square caged wheeling hamper.  I can’t tell you how much I love it!  I can easily push it aside, wheel it where I want it, and pull out the lining to wash it as needed.  Plus, it has the perfect industrial style laundry room look.

A few great components in this room are unchanged but worth mentioning.  Since our laundry room has an entrance out to the garage, it houses black cubbies for the kids and a family command center.  The dry erase board is a great out of the way place to keep school forms, jot notes, and keep reminders.  The cubbies help corral coats and shoes and miscellaneous items that the kids can stick in their monogrammed baskets.

The other thing I love in our laundry room is the hook I made for towels and trunks.  After swimming in our backyard pool, the kids have a place to hang suits and towels while they dry.  It saves the bathroom floor from being littered with clothing.

A few simple touches not only add practical organization to the laundry room but some style as well.  What are your favorite tricks for keeping your laundry room organized?

      It’s from Walmart. Part of the Better Homes and Gardens line that they carry … and very affordable!
