Every year, I make my kids a special treat on the first day of school.  Something with a school theme that makes the day feel special and gets the year off to a fun start.  This year, these easy mini apple donuts might be our first day treat … and they can be yours too with just a few simple ingredients and very little time!

easy mini apple donuts

To make these little apple donuts, you’ll need a quick trip to the grocery store to buy some mini donuts {I used white powder donuts but you could really use any kind}, red icing {squeezable is easiest}, and a green candy that can easily be cut {I used a thin green licorice candy}.

ingredients for apple donuts

Using clean kitchen shears, cut small leaf shapes from the green candy.  Simply free-hand the leaves … they’ll look cute and whimsical regardless of their shape or how perfect they turn out.

With the red icing, “scribble” across the donut, covering it as much or as little as you like.

Stick the leaves on top, using the existing icing to attach them, and you’re done!  You’ve got a super simple but cute treat for the kiddos … and it’s a mom score because they take so little time to make.  Won’t the kids be excited when they get home after school and find this waiting?  Or, you can serve them as a very sugar-y breakfast on the first day.  Teachers, be warned {wink}!
