Back to School Cupcakes

Every year {since my firstborn started preschool in 2000}, I’ve made a special school-themed treat for the first day.  My goal is to never repeat any of the treats which means every August I’m busy scouring pinterest or trying to think of an original idea.  This year’s back to school cupcakes are my most recent idea and one of my favorite first day treats ever.  They took no time at all to make and I think the cute factor is huge.

I baked a batch of cupcakes {from a mix} and frosted them lightly with storebought vanilla frosting …

… then added a fun touch.  Using the top of a glass, I cut circles from rolled white fondant {again, storebought} and, using edible markers, drew lines to look like notebook paper.  For fun, I added a little math or spelling lesson to each one.  I couldn’t resist sneaking in an algebra cupcake for my high schoolers {smile}.

On the first day of school, my kids can’t wait to get home to see the back to school treat.

I keep it a surprise until they walk through the door.

The kids loved this year’s back to school cupcakes served on notebook paper napkins {found in the Target not-a-dollar spot}.

Our back to school treat tradition is just a fun way to get excited about a new year of school.  Do you have any special traditions to start a new school year?

Those are so stinkin’ cute! Wow…Easy too! My kids always pack their lunches on the 1st day, so write a first day of school note with stickers, glitter, etc. They say they always look forward to seeing what it will be.
