Decorating Tips {from an Amusement Park}

These decorating tips are part of a sponsored post for Wet Ones Antibacterial Hand Wipes.  I am a member of the Mom It Forward Blogger Network.

This summer, I spent a day at Six Flags with my three younger kiddos and, as I looked around, I realized that there’s some great decorating inspiration right there at Six Flags.  Think outside the box and check out these decorating tips from an amusement park! decorating tips from an amusement park

 1. Don’t be afraid of bold color.

color

Color is everywhere at the amusement park, from rides to characters to costumes in shows.  And color fits equally well in your home.  Add a bright pillow to the couch, paint a frame in a bold tone, or liven up a room with a vivid accent piece.

2. Lighting should enhance your decor.

vintage

From vintage marquee lights to dimly lit rides, lighting plays a key role at an amusement park and also has a key role in your home.  Change light bulbs, add dimmer switches, change up lamps and shades, and experiment with lighting in a room.  The right lights can take a room from barren to cozy with just the flick of a switch.

3. There’s always a place for reclaimed wood.

distressed reclaimed

I love old, distressed wood and it’s a strong element on vintage rides as well.  The floor of the carousel is made from planks that have been distressed over time and it adds an instant touch of history and warmth.  Hardwood floors in a home may not have history but they do add warmth.  For a vintage component, find some old reclaimed barn wood and turn it into a plank wall or some unique wall art.

4. Embrace the imperfect.

imperfect

One of the quirky things I loved about the kids’ area at Six Flags were the deliberate imperfections used in the styling.  While I love symmetry and balance, the opposite can also have a place in the home.  Frame a kids’ drawing, use that slightly crooked heirloom table runner, and ignore the chips on the daily dishes.  When a home is truly a home it should look a bit imperfect and lived in.

5. Industrial elements add rustic charm.

industrial

You don’t have to add pulleys and gears throughout your entire home but a few industrial touches add a neat rustic element.  Soften up harsh industrial metals with soft fabrics and strong textures for a cozy and eclectic look.

6. Use signage to add whimsy to your home.

signage

Vintage signs and handmade wall art are a great way to add personality and character to a room.  Flea markets and thrift stores are the perfect place to find old signs.

7. Repurposed items are a perfect conversation piece.

repurposed

Give new life to something old by repurposing it into a functional and practical piece for your home.  Look at items in a new light and think outside the box.  Repurposed pieces have a style all their own!

8. Keep Wet Ones Antibacterial Hand Wipes handy.

wet ones

Just like at an amusement park, life gets messy.  Life gets lived, hands and faces get dirty, and Wet Ones Antibacterial Hand Wipes are perfect for cleaning them up.  Hypoallergenic Wet Ones wipe out dirt and messes and kill 99.99% of bacteria {perfect for those times when soap and water aren’t available}.  Since they contain aloe and lanolin, they’re easy on sensitive skin.  The best part?  They come in various sizes that make it easy to discreetly stash them in a cabinet, a desk drawer, or anywhere you might quickly need some hand wipes.

Are you inspired by my amusement park decorating tips?  Want to rally up your own theme park decorating ideas?  I’m giving away 3 Six Flags tickets valid for the 2014 season at any Six Flags location.

Gosh, I haven’t been to Six Flags in about . . . 30 years! My kids are grown, but I still always have Wet Ones with me. You just never know when you might need them 😉

I’m pretty sure I would carry them along just about everywhere. I tend to be a bit or a germ fanatic 🙂

This post is so adorable! You would never think of decorating your house like an amusement park, but the design ideas still hold true. As for the wipes. We keep them with us everywhere. Kids are so dirty!

I would bring them when my daughters and I go bowling — we like to order loaded nachos when we bowl, but eating finger food while bowling is kind of gross!

Wet ones are great to have on hand before eating or even just to use throughout the day since sometimes you touch yucky stuff!
