If you read Dukes and Duchesses regularly, you’ll know that I’m a big fan of coffee and an even bigger fan of the whimsical … and this week I’m combining the two in a fun little craft I made with my Cricut: DIY coffee stencils!  I’ve seen coffee stencils in stores but thought it would be fun to try DIYing some with my own punny sayings.  Using the stencils takes a bit of practice but the outcome is really cute and definitely whimsical!

DIY coffee stencils

To make your own coffee stencils, you’ll first design them on Cricut Design Space.

I started by creating a circle the diameter of the inside of my cappuccino mugs {about 3.5 inches} and then adding the text or design inside.  You can’t go wrong with a basic heart but I can never resist a good pun either and it’s pretty easy to come up with some coffee puns.  Use a font that isn’t too skinny then center it in the middle of the circle {use the align feature to make it easy}.  Select the circle and the text or design and attach them together so they’ll cut the same way they look on the screen.

For disposable stencils, you can cut them using kraft board but if you prefer something a bit more permanent, use some type of thin plastic.  You could probably cut a piece from a plastic folder and use that … it would be cheap and easily accessible.

Make a latte with a decent layer of foam on top.  You could use a latte from your favorite coffee shop too but make sure it has a good layer of milk foam.

Hold the stencil over the foam, as close to the foam as you can without letting it stick to the foam {if it sticks, it’ll be hard to remove without wrecking the design}.  I found it easiest to hold the stencil with tongs.

Fill a sifter spoon with cocoa or cinnamon and gently dust it over the design.  The key is to dust it enough that the design shows well without completely dousing it.

Lift the stencil away and you’ll have a sweet design decorating the top of your latte!

Wouldn’t a message on morning coffee be a fun surprise for a friend or a loved one?

If you’ve got some clever coffee puns, I’d love to hear them!  What would you write on a latte?
