Cowboy and Cowgirl Twin Birthday Party

We just threw Luke and Lila’s cowboy and cowgirl twin birthday party to celebrate turning two and it was so much fun!  It’s not always easy coming up with twin birthday party ideas, especially when the twins are the opposite gender, but this idea worked perfectly.  A lot of party ideas can accommodate boy girl twins just by changing up colors and adding a few extra details.

cowboy and cowgirl twin birthday party

This was the first birthday party we’ve had in our home that brought lots of surprises for me: crazy weather {which had me hauling things in and out numerous times before we decided we actually could hold most of the party outdoors}, a birthday boy who wasn’t in a partying mood, and guests who were unable to make it.  It was probably a good lesson in lowering my expectations … and at the end of the day, those little things didn’t matter at all.

Cowboy Cowgirl Twin Birthday Party Decor

I chose red and blue as the colors for the party and then decorated with a lot of different items we already owned.

I pulled bandanas and bandana fabric and used them as table covers, put bandanas and cowboy hats on teddy bears and used them to create the centerpiece, and I added a few storebought items like signs and plastic barbed wire.

I also wrapped spoons in bandanas and let the kids use the bandanas as napkins rather than buying paper ones.

Cowboy Cowgirl Twin Birthday Party Activities

As the kids arrived, they got to choose a red or a blue trimmed cowboy hat …

… and then they got to choose different activities at stations set up around the backyard.  Since toddlers just really like to play, all of the activities were centered around easy free play that just required a bit of parent help and encouragement.

I bought a package of signs and used those to mark the stations but if you have time, it would be really cute to make your own signs with wood and paint, kind of like I did for our backyard campout party.

They played in the playhouse that was turned into a general store …

… rode DIY stick ponies {click on that link for the simple instructions to make the ponies} …

…played pin the tail on the horse, smacked a horse pinata filled with candy and treats …

… and had backyard hayrides in a wagon filled with raffia {I thought real hay might be too itchy and poky}.

Horse Cake for Cowboy Cowgirl Twin Birthday Party

After the kids got tired of all the stations, they sat down for cake and ice cream.

I’m definitely not a cake decorator but I love to make homemade birthday cakes.  I’ve had some serious fails over the years but they’re also some of the best memories.

To make this horse cake, I used an idea from an old FamilyFun magazine.  It was far from perfect but two year olds only see the beauty {wink}.

Cowboy Cowgirl Twin Birthday Party Favors

At the end of the party, the kids all went home with simple cowboy party favors.  I filled inexpensive red and blue bandana printed bags with themed items like horse stickers and pencils and the kids took those home along with their cowboy hats and stick ponies.

Luke’s highlight of the party was discovering that the pinata contained lollipops.  It made the whole party worthwhile for him {smile}. Lila loved it all, but particularly loved the new sunglasses she got as a gift.  And my highlight was watching them blow out their birthday candles.  I loved the look of wonder in their eyes!

This was a really fun party to plan and the kids all seemed to have a great time … and at the end of it, that’s all that matters!

I also am amazed that they’re two! It seems like yesterday we were hearing your good news for the very first time, and amazed by how quickly your tummy grew rounder and rounder.

It looks like the party was alot of fun. As a fellow planner/list-maker, I hope your unmet expectations didn’t damper the event.

I SO wish that we could have come. It would have been MUCH more fun than moving. 🙂 BTW, I have gifts for L&L… I just have to find them in my garage. They might be Christmas gifts instead. 😉

What a fun party! It looks like you made the stick horses from mens socks. Is that right? This is a perfect idea for my sister who is planning a horse birthday for her 2 year old! Thanks for joining my party!
