Years ago, when Luke and Lila turned two, we hosted a cowboy and cowgirl party to celebrate. The party had a number of creative ideas but the DIY upcycled sock stick ponies might have been my favorite. The kids played with them at the party, as one of the party activities, and then took them home as party favors at the end. They were really easy to make and you can whip up a pile in no time, making them the perfect craft for a western party!
Supplies for Upcycled Sock Stick Ponies
To make these easy upcycled sock stick ponies, you’ll need knee socks in any color {I chose neutral colors but bright colors would also be really cute}, polyfill, coordinating yarn, felt, large teddy bear eyes, and a thick dowel around three feet long and at least an inch in diameter.
How to Make Upcycled Sock Stick Ponies
To make each stick pony, stuff a sock with polyfill, leaving a few inches empty at the top of the sock. Be sure to stuff the polyfill right into the toe of the sock to give the pony head its shape.
Add the teddy bear eyes to each side of the head, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Cut three inch pieces of yarn and lay them over the top of the head, like a mane, and glue down the middle. Cut a nose shape from the felt and glue it in place.
Use a long piece of yarn to attach the sock onto the dowel. To do this, push a few inches of the dowel inside the sock, gather the sock around the dowel, and wrap yarn a number of times around the sock and dowel then tie it in a knot. Be sure to wrap it tightly so the sock won’t slip off the dowel.
These stick ponies are silly and whimsical {and so simple to make} but a fun party activity and favor for little cowboys and cowgirls.
