Upcycled Quilt Garland

While we were on our Grand Canyon road trip last summer, we stopped at the cutest junk shop somewhere in Arizona.  There were garlands made out of vintage quilts hanging all over the shop and I was inspired to use one of my old quilts to make this upcycled quilt garland.

I’ve been on the hunt for a good vintage quilt to use for this project for a long time but decided to make it with a tattered, not-so-vintage quilt that I had.  This poor blanket has been through the wash so many times that much of it was in shambles and it either had to go in the garbage or get repurposed into something fun.

How to Make an Upcycled Quilt Garland

To make the garland, you’ll need bias tape along with cutting materials.

I used a rotary cutter, clear acrylic ruler, and cutting mat to make the garland pieces.  Fabric scissors would work fine as well but a rotary cutter is always my choice for a project like this.

To begin, cut a template or one garland piece to use as a pattern.  I created a triangle that was about seven inches long and about five inches across.

Don’t worry if the quilt makes the triangle a bit wonky.  That’s part of the charm.

Once all the triangles are cut …

… stitch along the sides to prevent the stuffing from falling out and the edges from fraying.

I roped my Mom into finishing up this project for me once I had it cut {smile} and she double stitched it to give it a really great finish.  The double stitching helps it lay flat as well but you could get away with one line of stitching, if you want.

Once all the edges are stitched, lay the pieces in the order you want, then place the top in between a piece of bias tape and stitch them all together.

Leave as much or as little space in between the triangles as you want.

When the garland is complete, hang it anywhere you need a little texture …
