Trash to Treasure Vintage Mirror

If you follow me on instagram, you may have seen the vintage mirror that I scooped out of someone’s curbside trash a few months ago.  I finally finished painting it and this trash to treasure vintage mirror is hanging on a wall in my dining room.  It’s one of my favorite trash to treasure finds so far and looks so much better than when I first found it!

The mirror started like this.  The actual mirror was in perfect shape but the previous owners had taped it off and painted it with a coat of white paint or primer.

They must have decided they didn’t want to finish the project and I was happy to take over.

I taped off the remainder of the mirror and covered it with plastic then sanded it down to get rid of the streaky lines.

I then spray painted it with Valspar Flat Caramel Honey.

I distressed the mirror along the edges and used dark brown wax to bring out the decorative features along the bottom of the mirror …

… and along the top of the mirror.

The hardest part of this entire makeover was getting the age-old tape off the mirror.  It had obviously been sitting in a hot Texas garage or attic for a long time and the tape was melted right onto the mirror.  It took a lot of adhesive remover, razor blades, and elbow grease to get it off and you can see that the mirror is still in need of a little Windex.

This trash to treasure mirror now hangs where this old {circa 1990’s} ribboned mirror used to hang and the old mirror will be retired to the thrift store.

I love the way the new mirror fills so much more of that wall and brings some bright color into the room.

Be sure to check out the farmhouse style button garland that I made to drape over the mirror.  It adds a fun and whimsical touch {I love garlands anywhere and everywhere}.

I love your new mirror! That caramel honey color is so pretty and goes so well with your wall color! I love the amount of distressing too – just perfect!

Before you take your “old” mirror to the thrift store, what if you replaced the ribbon in there with some burlap; skip the bow and hang some metal findings from it, like vintage-looking keys or something, and paint it a different color and distress it? 🙂
