A Paper Doll Costume

This year, Lila dressed up in a paper doll costume for Halloween.  We saw this idea in FamilyFun magazine {a magazine that’s no longer in print} and couldn’t wait to make our own version.  It’s quite simple to make, even if you have limited artistic ability, so don’t let the details scare you.

I changed things just a bit from the original tutorial that we saw in the magazine.

I made the entire costume from foam board rather than poster board.  It just seemed like a better, sturdier way to go and I imagined it would last better and hold its shape through the rigors of trick or treating.

I used the templates provided but altered the sizing just a bit.  And not enough, as you can see … although I think she looks cute and whimsical even with the too-short skirt.  Since I don’t believe the templates are available any longer, you’ll have to freehand the costume.  Just create very basic outlines and add a few details.  This costume is adorable no matter how simple you make it.

To attach the costume to Lila I just glued ribbon on the back of the shirt and skirt and tied it around her.  The black details are drawn on with a Sharpie and the purple is a watered-down acrylic paint that I slapped on.

To complete the costume, you just need a plain color shirt and leggings to wear under it.

Lila reminds me of an Eloise character in her paper doll costume and I think it’s adorable!  {Oh, and she won second place in her age group at the neighborhood festival!}
