Halloween is creeping up on us and it’s time to start planning those DIY costumes. My oldest son laughed when he saw this skein of yarn halloween costume, my latest creation, and commented that I was keeping in line with my history of creating costumes that the kids can’t sit {or sometimes walk} in. Not true, not true … I may have a couple of costume mistakes in my past {wink} but this skein of yarn isn’t one of them! Keep reading to see how easy it is to make … and then be sure to check out all the great costume creations at the bottom of this post!
To make a skein or ball of yarn costume, you’ll need a large piece of poster board, velcro, pipe cleaners {I used about four hundred}, two wooden dowels, two large wooden beads, and vinyl or markers to label the yarn.
Wrap the poster board around your child, hot gluing pieces together if needed and cutting to the appropriate length. The poster board will become the label and will attach in the back. Hot glue velcro to each side of the back pieces to join them together.
Prepare the knitting needles next. Squeeze hot glue into the wooden beads …
… then push a dowel in all the way to the end of each one and let them dry.
Next you’ll need to make the yarn. Take three pipe cleaners and twist them together at the ends to join them all together into one piece. Repeat with all the pipe cleaners until you have a large pile, each made up of three joined pipe cleaners.
Glue them inside the poster board, attaching half to the top and half to the bottom in a criss-crossed fashion {you want it to look like a skein of yarn}.
Using vinyl and a cutting machine or a marker, add some personalization to the label. You could add the name of a popular yarn brand, the weight of the yarn …
… or the contents of the skein.
Insert the knitting needles into the yarn, ensuring the placement won’t make it difficult to walk. Hot glue them into place.
That’s it! This skein of yarn halloween costume is a bit time consuming to make but you can rope the kids into twisting pipe cleaners together to make it go faster. Once you’ve got that part done, it goes together quickly.
And isn’t it just too cute? Poke your child’s arms and head through the yarn strands, attach the velcro in the back, and your kiddo is all ready for a night of trick or treating in this skein of yarn Halloween costume!
