A few years ago I hosted a little basketball party with chips served in an old basketball and it was a big hit with the guests! March Madness seemed like the perfect time to share the simple tutorial for repurposed basketball bowls. These upcycled bowls take just minutes to make and add a really fun and quirky touch to the party table!
To make these repurposed basketball bowls, you’ll obviously need basketballs. You can scour your garage, hit up the thrift store, or buy them online or at a sports or toy store.
You’ll also need scissors and saran wrap.
Using a craft knife or the end of the scissors, poke a hole along the middle of the basketball {right along the black line} and cut down the middle of the line until you’ve gone all the way around the ball. Trim any bits that aren’t even.
To make the bowls food safe, line them with saran wrap, using dabs of low temperature hot glue if needed to hold the saran in place. You can also place a glass bowl inside the basketball if you have one that’s about the same size.
Serve your favorite snacks in the bowls, use them to hold ice for drinks, or use the small size to hold a favorite dip for chips. When the food is gone, peel the saran wrap off and throw it away, then store the bowls for your next basketball-themed party.

The basketballs are collapsing a little. How do you get them to keep their round shape?

The bigger basketballs will sometimes bend a bit depending what the initial fabric/rubber/plastic was like. You can always put a clear bowl inside them to help them hold the shape.
