Years ago, I wrote a blog post for Mad About Martha and with all of the virtual and remote schooling that’s happening this year, I decided it might be a great time to revive the idea {please excuse the super old photos}! School is looking a whole lot different right now, with lots of kids at home, at least temporarily. Creating a work space that cuts out some of the distractions is vital, especially when you have multiple kids. This easy DIY study space idea can be whipped up quickly {the kids can even decorate their own} and your kiddos can have a customized space to tackle school!
How to Set Up a School Work Space at Home
To make a DIY study station for home, you’ll need a tri-fold board {these can be found in a variety of colors at craft stores or you can paint it the color you desire}, colorful or patterned duct tape, and clips, bands, colorful or patterned padded mailing envelopes, and other accessories for decorating and organizing.
You may want to hit up a local office supply store for a variety of elements to use on the study station.
Because tri-fold boards are a bit taller than I wanted, I cut it a little shorter and then wrapped the edges of the board with colorful duct tape. The duct tape not only adds a fun decorative element but it will also prevent the edges from getting battered and torn up.
Once the main board is ready, the kids can decorate!
As you or the kids are embellishing the board, think about what would make the work station more useful. Pockets cut from padded mailing envelopes are a great way to hold schedules or notes, colorful clips can hold pending assignments or spelling lists, and large colorful bands can even be wrapped around the board with loose papers tucked in.
The tri-fold board creates a cubby-style study space that cuts out some of the other distractions in the room and may help the kiddos focus better on the task at hand. And when school’s over for the day, the board can be folded up and tucked into a closet until it’s needed again.
What creative things have you come up with to make schooling at home more manageable?
