Herb Drying Rack

The other day I was at Hobby Lobby when I spotted the cutest colorful hook board.  I knew I could make it for about half the price and I also knew it would make a super fun herb drying rack.  My herbs are growing like crazy and this year I really want to dry some so I can use them during the winter months.

To make this herb drying rack, you’ll need a plain wood board {I used a piece of 1×4 but any board would work} and various knobs, hooks, and drawer pulls.  I found a great assortment at Hobby Lobby, some in the colors I wanted and some not.  If you want different colors, you’ll also need craft paint.

Paint the knobs and hooks in the colors you want and paint the ends of the screws as well {alternatively, you can paint the screws after you’ve got them in place}.  Allow the knobs and pulls to dry completely.

While they’re drying, paint the board white.

Place the hooks and knobs where you want them along the board and drill pilot holes for the screws.  If the hook already has screws attached, drill holes large enough to accommodate those screws.  Attach the hooks and pulls with short screws that won’t protrude through the back of the board.

For the hooks that already have attached screws, insert the screws completely through the board and use a Dremel to cut off the protruding part of the screws.  Since those screws won’t be threaded into the wood, you can use some hot glue on the back to secure them a bit.

Add a picture hook or hanging wire on to the back of the board to hang it on the wall …

… and the herb drying rack is complete!  It’s such a fun and colorful addition to home decor and if you don’t want to use it for herbs, it would make a super cute coat rack for a child’s room or a mudroom.
