I’ve been cleaning out my craft stash this week and planning a few projects to use some of the things I have. When I came across a large plastic Christmas ornament, I knew it would make a perfect upcycled DIY herb terrarium.
To make a repurposed terrarium, you’ll need a large clear plastic ornament, a craft knife, potting soil, and herbs or herb seeds of your choice.
Grab the supplies quickly by clicking the photos below to order them and have them delivered straight to your doorstep.
To make the terrarium, use the craft knife to cut a circle in the side of the ornament, above the midline. To make an outline for the circle, trace a circle directly onto the ornament or use a craft punch to make a template. I used a craft punch on sticker paper, stuck it directly onto the ornament, then used the craft knife to cut around the circle.
Use caution when cutting. You will probably need to use the knife to score around the circle a few times before you’ll be able to cut right through the plastic.
Try not to let the craft knife slip because it will scrape the ornament. However, if it does happen {as it did to me}, the plant will cover over those scratches making them quite insignificant.
When you’ve cut all around the circle, pop it out.
Add potting soil to the terrarium …
… and plant your favorite herb plant, pulling the herb out through the hole in the terrarium.
You could also plant seeds in the terrarium if you’re more patient than I am {wink}.
Tie a ribbon or twine through the top of the ornament and hang the DIY herb terrarium in a kitchen window or another sunny spot in the house.
You’ll have herbs at your fingertips so you can quickly snip a leaf or two and toss them in the latest recipe.

This. Is. So. COOL!!! I want to make one right now! I think that I might just need to keep my eye out for plastic Christmas ornaments at the yard sales I check out this summer. 😉
