I just finished a home improvement project that I’m so happy with: a garage makeover! Our messy, toy-littered garage now has an organized wall that contains all of the outdoor toys and sports equipment!
A few weeks ago I shared the plans for this garage organization project. I bought the supplies I needed at The Home Depot and got to work.
We have a large blank wall in the garage that I knew would be perfect for this project. Rubbermaid FastTrack allows you to make use of an entire wall, not just places where studs are located. I wanted everything to be contained in one spot and this wall was perfect. It would also allow us to pull cars into the garage without interfering with the car doors opening.
I followed my initial plan but did change one thing. Once I got started, I realized I wouldn’t be able to hang both bike racks on that wall so I ended up hanging just one rack for the younger kids.
I’ve installed a Rubbermaid FastTrack before and I love how simple they are to install. And once you’ve done one, they’re a breeze.
I marked the studs in the wall …
… then drilled pilot holes into the studs and 3/8 inch holes into the other spots. The larger holes hold anchors in between the studs.
I installed the screws into each of the pre-drilled holes …
… then slid the cover over. It’s as simple as that!
Once the cover is in place, hooks and extras can be added on. I set four bike hooks on the first Rubbermaid FastTrack.
I hung another Rubbermaid FastTrack to hold two vertical ball holders …
… and one wire bin …
… another Rubbermaid FastTrack with hooks and one more Rubbermaid FastTrack with a wire shelf. {I love the ease of hanging shelves with this method. The Rubbermaid FastTrack is installed as described above then uprights hook over it and screw into the wall, brackets pop into place, and the shelf hooks on. It couldn’t be easier.}
Once all the pieces were in place, the fun part started. I filled the vertical ball holders {which have rubber straps on the front so balls can easily be pulled out from the front or from above} and the wire bin …
… and loaded up the various hooks. I bought almost every style of hook and figured out what would work best for the items I wanted to hang. I love that the different hooks are so versatile.
The shelf, which is high, will store items that only get used seasonally. It’ll save me from putting that crazy sled away numerous times a month … we don’t use it a whole lot in Texas except to slide through the dirt!
The bikes are organized and out of the way {my favorite part!} and there’s even room to park the go kart underneath.
This project has made such an organizational difference and I’ve gone out in the garage just to look at it a number of times. I’m so thrilled to have the outdoor equipment sorted and organized … and in such a way that the kids can easily keep it up.
I plan to add a few more Rubbermaid FastTrack systems on other walls in our garage to contain some of the other items we store there. My goal is to have our garage completely organized by summer!
