This DIY upcycled fan cover light fixture post contains affiliate links.

Do you remember the DIY challenge I took part in last month?  I shared my DIY shoe shelves as part of a build to organize challenge and then shared a round-up of some of my favorite closet organization ideas.  Well, it’s time for another challenge with this awesome group of DIY bloggers and this month’s theme is Upcycle Thrift Store Challenge, a challenge right up my alley!  I completed a project that I’ve been wanting to make for a long time and I’m so happy with the way this DIY upcycled fan cover light fixture turned out!

How to Make a DIY Upcycled Fan Cover Light Fixture

I found this rusty vintage fan cover at a junk sale or thrift store a few years ago and it’s been sitting in my garage ever since, just waiting for the perfect project.  When I found it, I knew I wanted to turn it into a light fixture and when I moved into my new house last fall, I knew the hallway leading to the kids’ bedrooms would be the perfect spot!  It had a very plain white ceiling mount light and the hallway needed a little upcycled love.

To make the light, I bought a mini pendant light kit and two large {2 inch by 1.25 inch} reducing washers.

The opening of the fan cover was too large for the pendant kit so the reducing washers fit over the light kit and held the fan cover in place.

I placed one reducing washer over the shaft of the light kit, slid the light kit through the fan cover …

… placed another reducing washer in place under the fan cover, then screwed the light kit washer in place as tightly as possible.

Once the light was finished {which took about five minutes!} I removed the old light fixture from the hallway …

… and wired in the new light.

If you’ve never wired a light fixture before, it’s incredibly easy.  You turn off all power to the area, undo the wiring {three wires}, and attach the ground wire then the black and white wires, black to black, white to white.  You can find an entire tutorial online, I’m sure, but it’s truly that simple.  I still make my Dad come over and walk me through it every single time {smile} but I promise it’s simple!

I added an Edison style bulb …

… and the transformation was complete.  This fun light has added a really unique element to the hallway and I love everything about it!

Now to finish the gallery wall in this hallway and break up all that whiteness with a little more character!

Wow, this turned out great. It’s amazing how some of the simplest of projects can turn out to be wonderful works of art that really add a nice touch to the home. I would have never thoughts to use a fan cover to make a light.
