DIY Stenciled Welcome Mat

Do you love quick little craft projects?  Sometimes they’re the projects that are the most fun to create and have the most impact in a space.  That’s how I feel about this simple DIY stenciled welcome mat.  It took no time at all to make but it looks so much better than the old mat and truly suits my whimsical style.  And it’s orange … which makes it pretty much perfect {wink}.

DIY stenciled welcome mat

When I moved in to this house, the previous owners had left a mat at the front door.  An old mat that was plain black rubber with a pretty standard, boring design.  Not only was it unattractive but it wasn’t even super effective for wiping feet.  Replacing it went instantly on the project list.

I bought a large, plain door mat at IKEA for less than $10 {you can find a similar door mat online} …

… and used my Cricut Maker to create a stencil out of chipboard.  I placed it in the bottom corner of the mat and dabbed orange paint over the stencil.

A little tip: this type of mat has a lot of movement in the bristles which makes it hard to keep the stencil in place and tape won’t stick.  If you can find an extra pair of hands to hold the stencil while you dab the paint on, it’ll make the job a lot easier.

Once the mat’s dry, it’s ready to pop into position.

I love the way it looks and I’ll be even happier once the weather warms up and I can add some bright color to my front door!  This beige door is just not my thing.

Very cute! I can remember making a stenciled door mat for my grandmother when I was in high school. I made purple flowers with green leaves in the corner.

Every time I go to Ikea and see those mats I plan on getting one and stenciling it. Yours came out terrific!

I love this. It’s such a fun way to add a pop of color to a mat or to give it a personalized touch. Thanks for sharing at Snickerdoodle. We’ll be featuring this at tomorrow’s party. Hope to see you there.
