My oldest daughter is turning sixteen in a couple of weeks and we’re planning a black and metallic sweet sixteen party. Our party motto has quickly become: you can never have too much glitter. We’re turning everything metallic and glittery right down to the DIY glitter candles.
It’s really easy to turn regular birthday candles into glitter candles. Start with large number candles. I like the plain style of these ones that I found at Target. It doesn’t matter what color you buy since you’ll be covering them up completely with glitter.
Besides the candles, you’ll need mod podge, a brush, and glitter. Super fine glitter, like this Martha Stewart glitter, works really well and gives great coverage. I think it’s a little more expensive than coarse glitter but a small vial goes a long way.
Using a foam brush, cover the candle completely with mod podge. Be careful not to cover the wick.
Place paper, wax paper, or tin foil on the counter to catch the glitter {you can shake the excess glitter back into the container when you’re finished} and shake glitter over the entire candle, completely covering the candle and the mod podge.
Drill a couple of holes into a piece of scrap wood and stick the candles into the holes. The candles will stand upright while they dry.
Once they’re completely dry, they’re ready to use. {Like all candles, don’t leave them unattended while burning.}
These glitter candles are so easy to make and they’ll be a really fun and festive topper for the birthday cake!

Does the glitter fall off and onto the cake? Do you think once the mod podge dries I should and another layer to prevent this?
Randi Dukes says
The coat of mod podge prevents any glitter from falling off. It really seals it. To ensure it’s well sealed, once the initial layer is dry, gently rub your hand on it and if any falls off, apply another coat.

Mod podge wouldn’t even stick to the candle for me to add glitter to it.
Randi Dukes says
Really? What brand were you using? I wonder if the candle was too waxy. I didn’t have any trouble but I’m sorry you did!
