I have one more DIY Christmas project to share with you, and although you may not want to whip this up three days before Christmas, I thought you could pin it for next year {wink}. Or maybe one more quick and easy DIY is just the thing you’re looking for! This DIY stocking hanger is a simple building project and, whether you have a fireplace mantel or not, it’s a fun alternative to hanging the stockings in the standard spot.
Supplies for a DIY Stocking Hanger
To make a DIY stocking hanger, you’ll need a 4×4 piece of wood cut to the desired length {mine is about four feet tall}, a 14×14 inch square cut from thick plywood or something similar {I used one inch thick plywood}, a cap for the 4×4 {found among the fence supplies at the hardware store}, a wooden finial, and small hooks.
How to Make a DIY Stocking Hanger
Spray paint the pieces in your desired color. I chose a very traditional red but I love the idea of using something in a non-traditional color palette.
If you prefer, you can assemble the stocking hanger first {without the hooks} and paint the whole thing together.
Measure to find the middle of the base piece {the 14 inch square} and the middle of the bottom of the 4×4 then drill a hole through the center of the base and drill a pilot hole in the bottom of the 4×4.
Using a long screw, attach the base to the bottom of the 4×4 and secure tightly.
Drill a pilot hole through the middle of the cap and in the center of the top of the 4×4, then use the screw pre-attached to the finial to attach the pieces together.
You can also put some wood glue in the cap before placing it on the 4×4 to give it some added security.
Attach the hooks.
We have seven people in our family so I attached seven hooks and let the stockings overlap.
Be sure to place the hooks high enough on the 4×4 so the stockings don’t drag on the ground.
That’s it! You have a simple, rustic stocking hanger. Ours sits next to the fireplace, all ready to be filled on Christmas Eve!
Having a stocking hanger to hold stockings frees up the mantel for other decor, a feature I love since I’m always changing up my holiday decorations.
Where do you hang your stockings? Do you like the traditional look of stockings on the mantel or does a stocking hanger sound like a good idea?

I made a stocking hanger out of a ugly rust colored fire place screen this year. I painted it hammered nickel and used S hooks for the stockings, then set it in front of the tree. As a bonus my kiddos are not digging around peeking at gifts!

This is a great idea. We don’t have a fireplace or mantel, so I’m always looking for places to hang the stockings. this looks very simple!

Where did you get those stockings at?? Love it!!
Randi Dukes says
My Mom made them! They’re fun, aren’t they? The entire extended family has them.

I have a dumb question, when attaching the top part to the post, I see you said use a long screw and wood clue but how did you get attached? Does the screw have an open end on both sides?
Randi Dukes says
The long screw is for the bottom base. The top part is all attached with the screw that’s already on the finial. You’ll drill a hole through the piece and then use the finial and its screw to hold it all together. Let me know if that doesn’t make sense.

Can you use fence posts instead?
Randi Dukes says
Definitely! The fence posts that already have the finial on top would work great!

This is such a great idea… and I love the bright red festive color.
