How to Make Covered Nap Mats for School

This covered nap mats post contains affiliate links.

Like most young kids in preschool or kindergarten, Luke and Lila need nap mats for kindergarten.  I couldn’t bear to send them to school with the plain red and blue vinyl mats.  They just seemed too uncomfortable {who wants to sleep on vinyl?}, and too institutional.  I also didn’t want {or have time} to sew a nap mat from scratch.  Instead, I used fabric to make covered nap mats out of the regular storebought mats and I want to show you how easy it was!

I bought regular sized nap mats at a local big box store but you can find them online as well.

And then, I sewed simple fabric sheaths for them.

I used clearance bin home decor fabric so it was cheap.  The thicker fabric will stand up to a lot of tugging, folding, smashing, and general kindergarten nonsense.

I used a vivid striped fabric for Lila’s mat …

… and something a bit more boyish for Luke.

I measured the length and width of the storebought nap mats, added a little extra all around for a seam allowance, and added enough on the end to stitch on velcro and have it fully close over the end.

I simply stitched up three of the sides, folded over the end and stitched velcro pieces to each side of the end, and that’s it.  Super easy and super quick.

The nap mats still fold easily which is a must so they can stack in the classroom …

… and the velcro closure on the end means the covers can be pulled off and thrown in the wash.

Luke and Lila will be napping in style and a whole lot more comfort with their covered nap mats.

I still remember my nap mat from Kindergarden. Mine was similar colors to Lila’s: pink and purple plaid.

That’s a great idea! And you can wash them after them being on the floor! Cute!
