Giant Chalkboard Wall in Home Office

We spend a lot of time in our home office or study, working and playing on the computer or doing homework during the school year and it recently got a bit of an update with a large scale chalkboard wall {not a new idea but definitely a fun one!} and a few other updates.  These small changes had such a big impact and transformed this room from a space that was really blah to a space that I love!

The room we use as our study was actually intended to be the dining room but the layout didn’t make any sense to me.  It’s a bit too far removed from the kitchen and when I turned the family room into a gathering room I also turned the dining room into a study.

The space was really bland with white walls, a plain desk, and a light fixture that was fine in a dining room but not at all appropriate for a home office.

It’s amazing what a bit of paint can do!

I love bright and bold color and I have a palette of six colors that I use throughout my house.  Carrying that into the study, I painted the desk bright, glossy red, a huge improvement over the washed-out white with the pop of blue.  I love the way it pops with the industrial style chairs and the turquoise caddy.

And the biggest factor for making it pop is definitely the giant chalkboard wall.  I painted the entire wall with a number of coats {I wanted to make sure it was covered well} then seasoned it with chalk and let it sit for about a week before I washed it down.  I hung a cork board in the middle of it and then we all went to town, adding little notes and drawings.  I love that it’s a space where I can leave reminders but also a space where the kids can get a bit creative and draw and doodle or leave sweet notes for siblings.

The light also got a makeover.  I had other plans but the first fixture I hung had issues with size, length, and style so I ended up hanging a crocheted fixture from IKEA and I love the way it looks.  Because of the open shade, it allows lots of light in the room and the texture adds a soft element to a fairly stark space.

This room still needs a few more updates but I love the way it’s coming together.

The dark chalkboard wall has added a fun focal spot …

… and has given the space a bit of an identity and helped to pull it together, breaking up all the white.

Step by step, this house is reflecting our style and truly becoming a home!

That would be so fun to have a whole wall for a chalkboard. I’m sure the grandkids would love it but I doubt the hubby would. Lol

We have a chalkboard in our kitchen made into our pantry door. It actually was a chalkboard from an old school. We couldn’t live without it. Great for to do list and my hubby loves erasing once accomplished. No more nagging to get things done, yay!
