My oldest daughter goes back to college in a month and this year she’ll be living in a house with four other girls. We decided to move the majority of her things up early and get her furniture assembled and set up in her room … and add a few DIY projects, including this dry erase wood slice grocery list, that will hopefully make life with housemates a bit more coordinated and organized.
I had the pleasure of driving a 2018 Ford EcoSport the week of her move and we used it to haul everything up to Oklahoma. I won’t lie … when that sporty car showed up in my driveway, I couldn’t imagine being able to fit everything in it. But we did!
The swing gate rear door made it super easy to load …
… and by putting the split fold-flat seats down in the back, we were able to load up HUGE boxes containing a full size bed frame {it was over five feet long} and a desk!
Throughout the week I hit up IKEA and filled the car with goodies and even made a trip to ReStore and fit large closet doors in the back with no problem! While this crossover-style vehicle may look small on the outside, I was amazed at the cargo space inside!
I also loved the size of the back seat {my tall 20 year old son described it as roomy!} …
… and the gas mileage. The gas tank on the Ford EcoSport is about half the size of the vehicle I regularly drive but I was able to drive further on a tank of gas in the EcoSport than I can with a tank of gas in my minivan. With gas prices high this summer, that was a highlight.
I also fell in love with some of the smaller details: the moonroof, the fun interior ambient lighting that can be switched to different colors for any mood {you know I love color!}, the blindspot detection, the cruise control settings that show you digitally what speed you’re set at and what speed you’re going {it made the drive to Oklahoma a breeze!} …
… and the large screen that makes it super easy to see maps in the navigation system or the rear camera while reversing and parking.
I loved the size of the Ford EcoSport and hated having to give it back … but it’s on my list of cars I want when I have less than five kids traveling with me regularly {wink}.
Back to the college move in: we got her room all set up {it’s adorable and she made the cutest tassle and branch wall hanging to sit above her bed} and she can’t wait to live with her roomies this fall. They’ll be meal planning together and sharing some groceries so a community grocery list made sense … and it had to be cute, of course {smile}.
To make the dry erase wood slice grocery list, we started with a store bought wood slice and dry erase paint. I wanted to use brush-on paint but had a hard time finding a small container so I used spray paint instead.
Taping off the edges was a bit tricky but I just used small pieces of tape and followed the natural colored line of the wood slice. Since the tree doesn’t have a perfect line, I decided my line didn’t have to be perfect either!
A tip: wood slices are super porous so you may want to do a coat of primer first or even a coat of another white paint to help seal the wood slice before applying the dry erase paint. Spray the dry erase paint over the entire surface, let it dry, and keep applying until you have a solid, shiny coat.
Remove the tape once the dry erase paint is completely dry then add vinyl to the top of the wood slice. I used my Cricut Explore Air 2 to cut the simple text from pink vinyl and used transfer tape to apply it.
If you want to attach a dry erase marker to the board, you can hot glue a small square of velcro to both the marker and the board or you can just keep a marker nearby.
Hot glue a heavy duty magnet to the back of the wood slice …
… and attach it to the fridge.
It’s such an easy way for everyone to keep track of needed groceries … and cute, too!
