I saw a really cute candle idea in a catalog a few months ago and I thought it would be fun to make a DIY version. This candle in a can gift idea would be cute in any colorful can but it’s perfect for the winter months when made in a maple syrup can.
To make a candle in a can, you’ll need candle wax, wicks, essential oils {if desired}, and decorative cans. Make sure the cans have a label that’s printed right onto the can and not on a paper wrap. I had a hard time finding maple syrups cans in the store and ordered the cans shown below online {affiliate link}.
The most difficult part of this craft is removing the tops from the cans without leaving a sharp edge. I actually used a Dremel to remove these tops, then filed the sharp edges and pressed any points down with pliers.
Melt the wax in a double boiler according to package instructions. Place the wick in the center of the can, attaching the bottom tab to the bottom of the can using a drop of hot wax or a drop of hot glue. Curl the wick over a wooden skewer to hold it in place and rest the skewer on the top of the can.
When the wax has melted completely, let it cool slightly then add essential oils to scent as desired.
Pour the melted wax into the cans and let harden completely. Trim the wick to an appropriate length.
That’s all there is to it! These candles in a can make a cute winter-themed hostess gift or the perfect gift for neighbors and friends.
