Butterscotch Cider Recipe

During the fall months, we love to drink hot apple cider!  One of our family’s favorite Thanksgiving and Christmas traditions is the big pot of steaming cider that simmers on the stove or in the crockpot all day, filling our house with a wonderful scent and providing a sweet beverage for everyone that comes over to celebrate the holiday.  I like trying new variations on the traditional apple cider and this butterscotch cider recipe was the latest experiment.  It has a sweet, slightly smoky flavor and is a fun twist on regular apple cider.

To make butterscotch cider, you’ll need a regular-sized bottle of apple cider and a bag of butterscotch candies.  Choose apple cider over apple juice because it’s much stronger but don’t buy spiced apple cider.  Plain apple cider found in the juice aisle of any grocery store is perfect.

ingredients for butterscotch cider

In a large pot, heat the apple cider over medium heat and add 25 unwrapped butterscotch candies.

Stir the cider regularly to mix the butterscotch flavors as the candies begin to melt.  Don’t boil the cider, just let it warm until the candy has melted completely and is fully mixed into the cider.

Pour the butterscotch cider into mugs and enjoy!  You can garnish with a skewer of caramels or a slice of apple or just enjoy it plain.

It’s a wonderful way to warm up on a chilly fall or winter day!  Leave the cider warming on the stovetop or transfer it into a crockpot to keep it warm.  Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge {you can let it cool and pour it right back into the cider container from the store for easy, recycled storage}.

Cider probably one of my favorite hot drinks! I like it better than coffee and hot chocolate. I’ve never thought about doing that or scratch in it. That would definitely give it an even better flavor.

I have never cooked cider on the stove. It does sound like a great way to have a great air freshener and make it smell like grandma’s. I would love that butterscotch flavor too.
