The minute the weather turns cooler {I can’t really say “cold” since we live in Texas and truly cold weather is a bit rare}, we start serving warm cider. I love to have a big pot of cider simmering on the stove, the scent filling the house and drawing everyone to the kitchen to fill their cups. This hot citrus cider is a slight twist on regular apple cider but equally delicious and a winter time favorite in our home.
To make a batch of hot citrus cider, you’ll need 2 quarts apple cider {don’t use spiced cider}, 1 cup orange juice {I prefer pulp free}, 1/4 cup lemon juice {fresh squeezed is delicious but bottled is fine too}, 1 sliced orange, 1 sliced lemon, 1 teaspoon whole cloves, and 3 cinnamon sticks.
Combine all ingredients in a pot and bring to a boil on the stovetop. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes to allow the flavors to blend.
Use a slotted spoon to remove the solids and throw them away.
Serve hot with an orange or apple slice or a cinnamon stick as a garnish.
If you’ll be serving this cider at a party, you can leave the solids in and keep the cider on low heat for as long as you need. The simmering cider will add a wonderful, welcoming aroma to your gathering!
