Back to School Cakes

Every year I make the kids a special school themed treat on the first day of school.  It’s a fun way to celebrate the milestone of another year and another grade.  I thought it would be fun to take a look back {but excuse the very amateur cake decorating}.

If any of you remember the old magazine, FamilyFun, some of these ideas came from those pages. I miss that magazine so much! It was always full of such fun ideas and it really inspired me to be creative with my kids.

Back to School Cake Ideas

I’m quite bad at cake decorating and I may regret sharing this post if these end up on one of those memes {wink}, but I think doing something is better than doing nothing, even if it’s imperfect … and kids love a celebration regardless of how good or how bad the cake is!  So let’s take a look at these back to school cakes.

This school bus cake was made by stacking two rectangle cakes and then decorated with icing, cinnamon candies and white chocolate chips for lights, donuts for tires, and vanilla wafers for faces.

These simple cupcakes were homemade but you could easily embellish a storebought cupcake as well. The decorations were made with fig newton cookies, small pieces of chocolate, runts candies, and decorator gel.

My kids loved these school bus cupcakes! All you need are some wafer cookies {separated}, cinnamon candies, chocolate chips, and icing.

This cake is simple but cute, and a fun way to remember some summer activities. Two cakes, side by side, form the binder and the rest is created with icing. The binder rings were made with pieces of shoestring licorice and the pencil is a large pretzel covered with candy melt.

Here’s another version of a school bus cake with a few small variations. You could really use any type of candies to add embellishments. This time around I used black licorice to create the grill and window frame.

These computer cupcakes were made with chocolate covered cookies, icing, and a computer mouse made with a candy and some shoestring licorice.

If you need a super quick and easy idea, this pencil cake is it! The decoration just comes from different colors of icing.

I actually liked the way these cupcakes turned out. The chalkboards are made with chocolate covered cookies, the apples are runts, and the chalk is made from white Good & Plenty candies. The writing and apple stems were added with icing.

I took a step away from cakes and made apple cake pops one year. These were just cake pops covered in candy melt with a pretzel stem and candy leaf. You can find lots of internet inspiration for these if you need specific instructions.

I went super simple this year and added alphabet sprinkles and printable cupcake toppers to homemade cupcakes. Sometimes simple is all you can swing by the fifth kiddo!

Do you have back to school treat traditions? I’d love to hear about them!

A super ‘sweet’ tradition! I bet your kids get so excited to head back to school looking forward to the cake you have made them! I’m sure they’ll want to continue your tradition with their own kids. Love it!

What a fun tradition! I’ve tried to do that a couple of years. In fact, I made the 2001 bus cake and the bus cupcakes a couple of times. I’m really liking the printables stuck in cupcakes idea for this year-so easy. Thanks for the inspiration!

I always loved this idea but in our house it would be torture for the kids. John can’t stand deserts (for the kids anyway) so they would get a piece and the rest would go in the freezer and eventually be thrown out. I’ve given him the nickname “Food Nazi”. lol!

I was away on holidays when your school started. I hope everyone has a great year!

How fun! I love celebrating b-day parties with cakes and cupcakes, but never thought to make a cake for back to school. Love this.

I shared this with my readers today who might be looking for back to school solution ideas.

What a great tradition! As homeschoolers we don’t particularly “celebrate” but we do take days off during the year that the other schools don’t so we celebrate then! Visiting from the CSI Project.

The chalkboards are chocolate covered graham crackers with icing for the writing. You should be able to find them at most stores in the cookie aisle.
