Don’t you love it when a project turns out just like the picture you have in your mind? This painted dresser is just as I envisioned it and is perfect for my daughter’s room! Let me show you how easy it was to make with Frog Tape® Shape Tape™!
It’s always fun to see a before shot so here it is. This dresser was a 1997 garage sale find and I originally stenciled it with teddy bears for my firstborn’s nursery then painted it in the pattern below for my daughter’s room. I loved the way it looked in a young girl’s room but Kennedy had outgrown it and it didn’t match her updated room at all. A paint job had been on the to-do list for quite some time!
I’ve been intrigued by Frog Tape® Shape Tape™ so when I had the opportunity to try it, I was really excited … and I knew it would be perfect for this project.
Unlike any other painter’s tape, Shape Tape™ has PaintBlock® Technology. PaintBlock® is a super-absorbent polymer that reacts with latex paint and gels to form a barrier that seals the edges of the tape. And let me tell you, it’s awesome! The only time I had any bleeding paint was in a few spots where I didn’t press the tape down properly. Everywhere that I applied it properly, the edges were perfect! It takes away the fear that comes when removing the tape … you know what I’m talking about, right?
I lightly sanded the dresser, spray painted it in a glossy brown then applied the Shape Tape™ to the sides of the dresser. The tape has a split liner on the back which makes it easy to remove part of the liner, apply the tape where you want it, and then remove the rest of the liner. Depending on how you lay your tape, you can get so many different looks! I wanted a wide scallop pattern so I left a fair amount of space in between my rows {I measured between each row to make sure I had equal lines}.
I painted over the tape with a pretty aqua turquoise color, gave it two coats, and then easily removed the tape. And I couldn’t have been happier with how the scallop pattern looked!
The ombre drawers are so pretty against the dark background …
… and the scallop pattern on the sides adds a fun and feminine touch. Perfect for a teenage girl!
The dresser looks great from the front but I love the unique sides as well. Adding the scallop pattern with Shape Tape™ takes the dresser from fun to fabulous … and makes it a one of a kind piece!
To get the ombre effect on the drawers, I found a paint chip in the colors and tones we wanted and had a small sample size mixed in each color. Using colors from one paint chip ensured that they would all blend well in varying shades.
The original hardware went back on the dresser. I love the vintage touch and felt like it added to the overall look I was going for. After years of use, this dresser is full of dings and chips and definitely has a vintage feel!
My ombre scallop patterned dresser is now my favorite piece in Kennedy’s room and I can’t wait to do another project with Frog Tape® Shape Tape™! Maybe a wall next?
