10 Things to Do and See at the State Fair of Texas

Chevy provided me with tickets to the State Fair of Texas but all opinions are my own.  #SilveradoStrong

If you haven’t been to the State Fair of Texas this year, you have this weekend left to catch it!  We took in the sights this week and I have a list of ten things you have to do and see at the State Fair of Texas along with a few photos snapped on my phone.

10 things to see and do at the State Fair of Texas

1.  Eat a Fletcher’s corny dog.

The Fletcher’s invented the corn dog and it’s a State Fair tradition.  500,000 corn dogs are sold every year during the fair.

2.  Visit Big Tex’s Barn Yard.

The Barn Yard is a bit out of the way and you’ll probably need the map to find it.  Just follow the smell of livestock.  The area is filled with educational and interesting facts as well as adorable animals.  You might even get licked by a cow.

3.  Test drive a Chevy Silverado or a Corvette Stingray {and more} at the Chevrolet Ride and Drive.

Chevrolet is the official vehicle of the State Fair of Texas and qualified drivers can test drive some of the line up.  Phil and I drove the Silverado, the Stingray, and the Camaro.  Driving the sports cars was super fun but the truck track is awesome!

4. Feed animals at Children’s Barnyard.

You’ll ooh and aah over the baby animals, some of them just days old.  Kids can pay a small fee for a cup of food and feed and pet a large variety of animals.  It’s one of my favorite things to do.

5.  Eat fried food.

awards

Ignore the diet for a day and taste test some of the year’s fried food winners.  We like to try a huge number of things {we buy one serving of each item and everyone has a bite} and we definitely like to try the winners for Most Creative and Best Taste.  This year’s winners were fabulous!  Fried Thanksgiving Dinner, anyone?

6.  Watch a concert at the All-New Silverado Main Stage.

You can hear live music throughout a lot of the fair, blasting from the Main Stage.  The concerts are all free and there’s always a great line-up during the duration of the fair.

7.  See the sights from above.

We love to ride the Texas Skyway {a gondola with a panoramic view} but this year the Top o’ Texas Tower {a permanent structure} was added to the fair.  It’s 500 feet high and is the tallest tower ride in the United States.  It’s a great way to get a bird’s eye view of the fair and much of Dallas.

8.  Ignore the rain.

rainy days

The State Fair is open, rain or shine.  We visited on a rainy day and although we ended up pretty damp, we didn’t have to battle the crowds or wilt under the heat.  Sunny days are obviously great too and the fair even has sunscreen stands to combat the rays.

9.  Check out the new Big Tex.

Last year, Big Tex sadly burned down at the end of the fair but the new Big Tex is bigger and better.  Clothed in goods from Dickies, with a new voice and a darker complexion, he stands 55 feet tall and wears a size 96 boot {and now has a fire suppression system and fire retardant clothing}.

10.  Watch the fireworks.

The State Fair has a nightly parade and fireworks show.  A perfect way to end a fun day at the fair, right?

We love attending the State Fair every year!  Have you been to the State Fair of Texas?  Does your state have a fair too?
